Time to say goodbye to Symbian, moving to Android

Well it’s time to say goodbye to my choice of having Nokia Symbian phones. I must say, I have no problem using my Nokia 5800 XpressMusic except it’s resistive touch screen. S60 softwares work great on it. But there is a bottleneck here. New apps are not coming in Symbian. New apps developer are saying, if you have Symbian phone. You should use our mobile web. So the shortage of new apps and my less interest in the existing apps at Ovi store has put me to think to move on.

Sorry Symbian, we had a great time together. But you are not too old for me. You have not changed yourself to the demands of current age. Ta ta.

Now a days I am looking a suitable Android phone for me. And I have selected Samsung Galaxy Ace. It is very good in price and beautiful in shape. Well I don’t know why Samsung people made it too close to iPhone. I have talked some of my friends who are using Samsung Android phones, they showed some reservations on it’s RAM. That is 256 MB. Oh well if I guess, frequently having an eye on the task manager will save me from slowing the phone.

I don’t know how much it is easy to upgrade the Android firmware. Samsung Galaxy Ace is upgradeable to 2.3 (Gingerbread). And this is the major version update to Android by Google. Pretty cool. So seems every one want it. People who are coming from Symbian to Android, know how much easy it should be to upgrade the firmware. I guess if you have upgraded your Nokia firmware, you know how much quick it is. Painless simply.

Also I have confirmed that Urdu is not supported on this phone. I don’t know if any third party app or version 2.3 has the support for it.

I hope next post will be my hands on review on Samsung Galaxy Ace.

Install Urdu language in your default Nokia 5800 dictionary

You can install Urdu language (in fact those languages that Nokia is giving) on your default Nokia 5800 dictionary. I found it very useful. And I am currently using English to Urdu translation.

Now you can use WordPress on your Nokia phone. WordPress.org has release an open source S60 app for this. Quite handy application. As I have to use Opera to access my blog. But I hope the experience of using it through app will be great.

You can now post new posts and pages, edit existing content on your blog, manage comments, check stats and more on the go.

Change your default Nokia 5800 home screen

You want to give a new look to your Nokia 5800 home screen? Yes there is a way to customize it. You can get fully widgetized home screen theme. I just changed my Nokia 5800. It looks very cool. If you have this model, must give it a try.

On this forum there are penalty of home screen themes available. You can download of your own choice.

For installation, you need to sign your app against your IMEI code. There are multiple ways to sign. But I use an online service to sign the apps. Looks very easy and continent to me.

Go to OPDA.cn, after sign up give your IMEI code. Upload your unsigned .sis file that you just downloaded from the above forum.
Download signed file of your home screen theme and install to your phone
On your phone got to: Setting > Personal > Home Screen > Home Screen themes. And select your desired theme.

Pakistani flag S60 theme for Nokia 5800 XpressMusic

I just found Pakistani flag Symbian S60 v5 theme. Tried on my Nokia 5800 XpressMusic. And it looks great. I should found this theme on 14th of August.

iPhone theme for Nokia 5800 XpressMusic

The most interesting thing about iPhone is its usability. People love to customize things like they want to see them. I also searched out a theme that gave the iPhone look to my Nokia 5800 XM phone. I like the icon set of iPhone and this theme has tried well to look alike.

Upgraded Nokia 5800 XpressMusic firmware on v 50.0.005

Last day I made another attempt to upgrade the firmware of my Nokia 5800 XpressMusic to latest version that is 50.0.005. I was running version 40 before it. I read a lot on Internet that people are facing troubles after upgrading their phone software to this version.

I upgraded from OTA (on the air). I dialed *#0000# check for the latest updates. Connected it to the WI-FI Internet and upgraded it. I also face troubles when I upgrade my phone software last time. My phone keep on restarting after some time. At that time I keep my memory card inside. But this time I put my memory card out in this upgrade process. And there are no restarts till now.

So I suggest if you want to upgrade to this version, try this trick. Put your memory card out while downloading and installation.

Free Twitter clients for Symbian S60 phones

Its quite a long time I was looking for a Twitter client for my Symbian S60 phone (Nokia 5320). Earlier I used JTwitter but it gone to paid application so I only left with m.twitter.com or dabr.co.uk like website to use on.

But recently a friend queried about it and I again had a search on it and come up with two free Twitter clients.

Snaptu

Snaptu is Java based funbox. If you phone is Java enabled, it can be installed. More than just Twitter client, it contains every thing that we need to used on Internet on daily basis. Name any social networking or daily use site, they have them on it. Almost every popular site is available as a widget, which can be added to Snaptu. The Twitter interface is very clean. TweetS60

TweetS60 is Symbian based applicatin. Available in .sisx file with just size of 110 Kb. Very sleek interface with basic features of tweeting. You need to signin for only once and the thing I like over Snaptu is you can set Internet access point. It means you didnt need to select your Internet access point every time it refreshed. You can download TweetS60 from here.

I have decided to keep both applications on my phone. I will use TweetS60 for Twitter and will use Snaptu for other Internet needs. Like cricket score, weather, images and calandar etc.

Availability of Symbian OS in Nokia mobile phones has created outsized number of mobile application developers. Who are developing softwares to make your phone, more than just a calling device. If your mobile has Symbian S60 platform software then a big mass of software is there to choice. Here I am compiling a list of my favorite S60 software which I am using in my Nokia 5320 XpressMusic. All are free. Enjoy.

1. Opera Mini: Opera Mini gives you the full Web experience on your mobile phone. Browser which provided as default in Nokia phones is not featured rich and very basic. Opera Mini provides you full view of web with auto completion address bar.

2. Y-Profile Scheduler: I have to change profile when I am in office and when I left office back to General. So I was looking for such software which automates this thing and schedule the profiles according to time line and days.

3. Gmail: A fantastic Java-based application for accessing your Google Mail account on your mobile phone. Though it comes up with very limited functionality but yet it’s a great effort to provide Gmail inbox in your mobile phone.

4. Enhanced S60 Calculator: Default calculator of Nokia phones is not much usable. I have found a calculator application from Nokia Beta Labs. This calculator is easy to use and also has some scientific functions. The problem in this calculator is its slow in responsiveness.

5. cCam: Now with Nokia phones you can not take pictures without shutter sound. Nokia has excluded this feature. cCam is a camera capture program that saves pictures without shutter sound and flash light to the default memory card image directory.

6. Fring: The only pc independent peer-to-peer mobile VoIP service. Fring also provides a wide range of instant messaging and social connectivity options.

7. Screenshot: You can capture screen shots from your S60 phone.

8. Calcium Calculator: A fast, easy and classic calculator for Symbian S60 phones.
